After the Course

Tutor Self-evaluation

On completion of a course, a tutor can reflect on his/her own performance to establish which elements of the course worked and to consider how the course might be improved if it is to run again in the future. A tutor can reflect on the learners, course content, and the effectiveness of his/her teaching method methodologies. This evaluation exercise can also be undertaken with colleagues.

A tutor might ask the following:

Learners

Why were the students enrolled? What was their motivation?

Was there a mix of students? Consider a student profile.

Were there mixed abilities?

How did this particular mix impact on the success, or otherwise, of the course?

What were the student expectations on joining the class?

Did they have realistic expectations? If not, why?

Did the students have the right abilities/aptitude for the course?

Did students have sufficient literacy skills?

Do the admission criteria need to be reconsidered?

What was the attrition rate and why?

Did students give reasons for not completing the course?

What were the concerns, or anxieties, of students?

Were the students comfortable in a classroom situation?

Were students keen to participate?

Did all the students participate in discussions?

Did the group need supports? What kinds of supports were needed? Could/should these have been planned for/envisaged?

How did students develop/change over the duration of the course?

Why were the successful students successful?

Content

Were goals and outcomes met?

Were students interested in the course content?

Was the material pitched at the right level?

Was there sufficient introductory material covered?

Was it necessary to revise the material at any point? Why?

What areas evoked the most response?

Which material was understood most easily? Why?

What areas caused difficulties?

How might the difficult topics be presented differently?

How could the material be updated/revised to make a greater impact?

Was there any unnecessary overlap in content?

Was the material contemporary and up-to-date?

Was the course timed correctly?

Was there sufficient time for reflection?

Was there sufficient time for group work, or discussion?

Did students have sufficient prior knowledge to enable them participate in the course?

Was there an opportunity to draw on the students' personal experiences?

Did students reach the anticipated outcomes? If not, why?

Were there any unanticipated learning outcomes?

If the students were assessed, was their work up to the expected standard?

Which areas of the course did students concentrate on in their assignments? Why?

Are some areas being focused on to the detriment of others?

What would need to be changed for future courses?

In future, would it be necessary to add new topics? Why?

Methodologies

Was there a sufficient mix of teaching strategies?

What was the ratio of talk time - students: tutor?

Were adult education principles followed?

Was the group facilitated well? Could anything have been done differently/better?

How were the student introductions organised?

Did the ice-breaker activity work well? Why/why not?

Was there a good group dynamic? Why/why not?

Was there opportunity for experiential learning?

Was there group work? Did everyone participate willingly?

Did students have an opportunity to participate individually?

How did students react to different exercises?

Was there opportunity for discussion?

Were audio-visual or information technology resources integrated into the course?

Was the material presented in a variety of formats to accommodate all learning styles?

Was student feedback encouraged?

Was it necessary to incorporate study skills advice?

Were problems/conflicts in the group addressed adequately? How?

How might problems have been dealt with more effectively?

Was the assessment fair and relevant?

Could the students be assessed in any other way?

Did the assessment adequately test the material covered?

What was the level of work presented?

Was adequate feedback given to students?

Did students have an opportunity to evaluate the course content?

Which teaching strategies were most effective? Why?

What elements of the course presented challenges?

Personal development

How would I run the course differently?

What are my own learning needs after the course?

What skills do I need to acquire to be more effective in my teaching?

Would I benefit from professional development/training?

What areas could I read up on to better inform my practice?
